[laNeva News] Announcing Beetlekill Pine Tile

In our quest to provide the coolest, most unique artisan-made tile in the USA, we approached Ryan Schlaefer of Ryan Schlaefer Fine Furniture in Loveland, Colorado to partner with laNeva to produce tile using an uncommon material: waste wood killed by the Northern Pine Beetle.

Before we get into the details of the wood, we have to tell you about Ryan: A graduate of the Art Institute of Colorado, Ryan’s contemporary furniture pieces have a sense of scale and artful mix of materials that can only come from an artist’s eye. Not just a furniture maker, Ryan uses the beauty of form to create one-of-a-kind (as well as ready-to-ship) pieces using beetlekill pine and an array of other woods.

Now back to the tile.

Beetlekill 1"x 2"

Wood tile? Wood killed by beetles? Yes and Yes.

Beetlekill wood is a waste product in many western states in the USA. Instead of letting the wood go to the chipper or providing unwanted fuel to forest fires, it is gaining a unique following and being cut and milled for everything from furniture to building materials.  Artists like Ryan Schalefer have developed a love for the look and story behind this unusual wood and incorporated this waste-wood into gorgeous contemporary furniture and fixtures- and now decorative wall tile.

The extraordinary detail about beetlekill pine is the streaking left by the beetles. The beetles leave an enzyme in the wood that turns the graining blue, gray, purple, or even rust colored. Each piece is an incredible act of nature, completely unique and available only through laNeva Artisan Tile.

For accent walls (non-wet locations), our Beetlekill pine tile can be applied with an epoxy straight to the substrate with butt-joints. No need for grout. Our pine tile is composed of 1/4″ beetle-kill pine with a backer of 1/4″ plywood, attached using a high-pressure lamination process. Before leaving the artists hands, the pine is sanded and edges smoothed, then a clear polyurethane is applied. We are currently offering 1″ x 2″ , 1″x 4″, 2″x 2″ and 2″x 4″ sizes. Additional sizes and finished edging pieces can be produced by request.

Our beetlekill tile has a very low expansion and contraction rate due to the plywood backer and as a result, it can be used in conjunction with our ceramic or SK8 tile and either butt-jointed without grout or grouted (using a flexible grout) to create a dynamic multi-media tile installation. If using in a damp location such as a backsplash, we recommend using a grouted installation with a sealer applied after install to both the grout and wood tile.

laNeva’s BEETLEKILL PINE TILE IS made from reclaimed waste wood in Colorado. This is beautiful, unique, functional tile with quite a story!

laNeva News: December 2010

December already. Wow. So much has been going on behind the scenes recently at laNeva Artisan Tile. We have some exciting changes to announce for the end of 2010 and the start of 2011!

  • PARTNERS: laNeva is thrilled to announce our newest partners in the tile biz: Spacial Adaptation, who will be representing our tile nationally, along with a host of other amazing earth-friendly products.
  • BOLD BORDERS: We’ve been hard at work on our LINEAL Border Collection of 6 large, pre-designed tile borders, along with our delicate SLICE Accessories Collection based off of our Rift Series tiles. Please stay tuned, our next post will be to announce the launch of these fabulous customize-or-not designs! You can choose one of our suggested color palettes or customize to your liking using our any of our standard glazes.
  • THE CART IS DEAD: As you may have noticed, we are no longer offering our online shopping cart. While it was a flashy sales avenue, it became evident that with so many custom designs, an online order venue was just not relevant.  It is kind of nice to know that humans are still needed, in both the production and order placement!
  • SAMPLES,  ANYONE? We are working to implement online sample orders, without all the cumbersome cart features that we experienced with our online shopping.
  • PRIVACY, PLEASE! Another feature on to be implemented in early 2011 is a password-protected section of the site for our dealers and members of the trade.

As we continue to explore new and exciting ways to use our Rift and solid color tiles, we look forward to being a part of your lives in 2011.  Thanks for all your love and support in 2010. Happy Holidays!

The Dirt – Glazes

#84 Siren showing brush strokes on 2x2 tile

Many of the glazes in the laNeva tile line create a fabulous watercolor-like finish on the tiles. This is in part due to our use of 100% lead free glaze and is even more apparent on the larger size tiles. Lead-free glaze does not move or melt as much in the firing process as leaded glazes do, and since we brush all of our glazes on by hand instead of spraying them on, the character of the brush strokes is apparent in some of our final tiles. Colors that have more obvious brush strokes are Oregano, Siren, Dune, Curry and Café.

The nature of the brush strokes all depends on the thickness of glaze application. Thinner coats of glaze show brush strokes more than thickly applied coats. Since laNeva tiles are all handmade, there will always be variation from tile to tile and order to order.

**laNeva Tile also offers overglazed edges when you need a tile with a finished edge. This overglazed edge is our version of the bullnose tile. We add an overglazed edge to create a finished edge at the side of a backsplash, shower wall or top of wainscoting, just to name a few applications. The tile edge remains square and the glaze color wraps all the way around the side thickness of the tile to create a uniform, finished side.

Announcing Café/Curry Rift Series

We’ve hinted, we’ve teased and it is high time to release a glimpse of our newest Rift Series jewel: #77 Café/#75 Curry. It is a stunning, coppery tone-on-tone tile that until now has only been seen in our sample packs. This beautiful color combo is perfect for those who want an understated look while still creating the color drama that only our Rift Series Tiles can offer.

Curry glaze provides the smooth, uniform butterscotch color and Café glaze offers more visual and tactile texture.  They combine to create a rich chocolate colored Rift Series tile with moderate modeling and a darker brown stripe at the center.

Want to see these beauties up close and personal? Email us at samples@lanevatile.com to request your sample pack today, available with 2″x2″ tiles in either 4 or 16 tile sets) and you’ll have your pretty little tile gift box in hand within 3-5 business days.

The Rift

#92-Mist/#61-Sky Rift, #84 Siren Solid, #95-Lichen/#68-Twilight Rift

What is the Rift Series and how did it get its name?

The Rift series is laNeva’s signature design that brings two colors of glaze onto one tile for a contemporary-bold or tone-on-tone look. Why is “Rift”, which has usually means “division”, used when we are instead bringing two glazes together rather than pulling them apart?

Our response? There is more than one definition of the word, and we are using it as “A space, an interval”.

The Rift Series Tiles are greater than the sum of its parts. Sure each tile has two glazes, but the magic happens in the center- where the two colors overlap. That is the point of the chemical reaction between the glazes. With some color combinations, this line of delineation becomes a series of beautiful bubbles, in others, it is a third color entirely, in even other color combinations, it is a subtle overlay of one color with a shadow line below. Each combination is completely unique and each tile within that combo has a character all its own.

On a micro scale, our Rift tiles are the grand canyon, with the drama being at the center, with the mountain ranges on each side playing a slightly less dramatic, yet integral role. As such, we are focusing on the drama in center, knowing that it cannot be achieved without the colors on the sides. Thus, the Rift.

laNeva’s Slick New Numbers

Always growing and evolving, the decision was made to re-number the laNeva tile colors. We’ve had problems with transposing numbers (I’ve even done it) and while the old numbers made sense to us, it was more than a little confusing to others. Really, why do you need, 2, 3 and 4 digit item numbers in a line that contains only 12 colors? So, with that, we introduce a 2-digit system whose numbers are easier to remember and cannot be transposed to create another tile’s number. Please, hold the applause-

#92 Mist

#95 Lichen

#90 Oregano

#24 Steel

#61 Sky

#68 Twilight

#31 Snow

#84 Siren

#73 Butter

#75 Curry

#77 Café

#71 Dune

Why Only 12 Colors??

laNeva Tile offers a limited color line by design.

We have chosen the best 12 lead-free glazes available for our 2010 color line and we have no immediate plans to add to those colors (well, possibly a few new things for 2011!)

Why only 12, you ask? Well, the answers are quite simple, but I shall give you the long(er) version:

  1. We want to keep it easy. It is easy for us to provide samples, easier for designers or homeowners to store samples, easier to order and ship our samples, and just plain easier all around to have a small color line.  Everybody likes “easy”, don’t you?
  2. We can’t be everything to everyone, but we do what we do well.
  3. Even with 12 colors, we have a possible 132 different Rift Series color combinations (using those 12 solid colors) and an unlimited range of size, solid color and Rift Series combinations.  Don’t you think “unlimited” is enough??
  4. Sometimes as a designer it is exhausting to sort through the ordinary, crap products to find the gems.  Look at it this way:  We’ve done the sorting for you.

Order a laNeva Tile full-line sample pack for yourself, or watch for our upcoming giveaways on Facebook and Twitter to win one (containing 2″x 2″ samples of laNeva’s 12 solid colors and 4 Rift Series teasers).  Then you, too will be a part of the coolest new thing in handmade tile!
